Fluoride is really unique. It is the only drug that we add to the water supply. Everything else we add to the water is meant to treat the water. Fluoride is meant to treat you, that's what makes it a drug. So what do we know about the effects of fluoride on people? Quite a bit actually and not very much of it is good. The Fluoride Action Network is a web site that indexes news, analysis and studies on fluoride. Fluoride is unique in another aspect as well. While being used as a drug, it is not isolated and purified like any other pharmaceutical molecule. That's because the fluoride the City of Ottawa adds to our water is not really a drug, it's toxic waste captured in "wet scrubbers" - pollution control devices used by the phosphate industry that processes phosphate rock into phosphate fertilizers. After being captured in the scrubbers, the fluoride (hydrofluorosilicic acid), a classified hazardous waste, is barreled up and sold, unrefined, to communities across the country. Communities add hydrofluorosilicic acid to their water supplies as the primary source of municipal fluoride. Ottawa's fluoride comes from Jacksonville Beach, Florida. In the past year, prices have doubled for the dwindling supply of fluoride, a byproduct of phosphate mining, said Dixon Weir, the city's manager of drinking water services. "There have been problems noted with the supply chain. We are aware that there are shortages that have been reported in other communities," Mr. Weir said. The water treatment plant in Britannia was forced to stop adding fluoride to its water between March 1 and May 23, he said. Another halt in fluoride supply also occurred there between June 20 and July 16. Interruptions also took place at the Lemieux Island water treatment plant for shorter periods in March and July, Mr. Weir said. Source
The phosphate rock contains fluoride, silica and traces of heavy metals such as uranium, radium, radon and lead. Don't worry about the uranium, radium, radon and lead contamination of our fluoride though, once diluted these elements should have no effects on our health. Right? In the past, when the industry let these gases escape, vegetation became scorched, crops destroyed, and cattle crippled. Fluoride is also used as a pesticide. That's right we use fluoride to kill things. Based on numerous incidents of fatal fluoride poisoning, Hodge and Smith (1965) estimated the certainly lethal dose to be 5–10 g sodium fluoride (32–64 mg fluoride/kg) in adults. More recent information includes the case report of a 3-year-old boy who swallowed 200 sodium fluoride tablets (1 mg fluoride each) for a dose of 16 mg fluoride/kg body weight (Eichler et al. 1982). Immediately after ingestion, he vomited and appeared to recover, but he collapsed 4 hours later. The boy died 7 hours after fluoride ingestion. Upon autopsy, hemorrhagic edema of the lungs, hemorrhagic gastritis, and massive cerebral edema were observed. The hemorrhagic edema observed in the lungs was probably due to aspiration of the gastric contents. Cloudy swelling was observed in the cells of the liver, heart, and kidney. In another case, a 27-month-old child died 5 days after ingesting about 100 fluoride tablets, for a dose of about 8 mg fluoride/kg body weight (Whitford 1990). Based on this case and weight tables for 3-year-old boys, Whitford (1990) calculated a probable toxic dose of about 5 mg fluoride/kg body weight. 5 to 10 grams is a lethal dose for adults? Is it even accurate to call this toxic waste? Wouldn't the term poison or chemical weapon be more appropriate? We have to have some fluoride, it's an essential element. Right? Maybe not. In this study they worked to eliminate fluoride and still had healthy teeth. "In a study where fluoride was rigorously removed from dietary components, a total of 110 Wistar rats were observed over the course of four generations (Maurer and Day 1957). There were no adverse effects compared to controls that received the same diet and 0.28 mg fluoride/kg/day in drinking water. Animals fed the low-fluoride diet were healthy, had sleek coats and healthy teeth, and had similar weight gains to those of the controls. ... Fluoride was only partially effective in correcting the bleached incisors found in the low-fluoride group. Bleached incisors have been related to deficiencies of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, and vitamins E, D, and A. None of these studies provide strong evidence that fluoride is an essential element." The damage done to these horses from drinking Colorado fluoridated water is devastating. This video gives evidence of tooth fluorosis, hoof deformities, bone fluorosis, skin disorders, and cancer caused by water fluoridation. Given a choice, the horses will ignore city water and eat snow. [8:25] The government of Ontario has passed an act delegating to our municipal level of government the decision to fluoridate or not. Water fluoridation is the single most important issue facing us at the municipal level. Do we continue to poison the people of Ottawa, with your tax dollars, or not? When given the chance to vote, nearly 70 percent of all communities in the United States have argued against fluoridation of water. Since 1999, nearly 100 US communities have rejected adding fluoride to water. Source Ottawa's water department has a hard time keeping raw sewage out of the river. You think they are able to make sure you are always getting "just" .75ppm? If they get the mix wrong the video above shows what some of the consequences are. Jharkhand, India has a town that is dealing with high dosages of fluoride in their water. |
